When I go away, I want to keep my holiday makeup streamlined and light. Think glossy, barely-there makeup, but still camera ready. Honestly, this is not exactly something I’ve nailed over the past few years. I have never really bought holiday specific makeup. And let me tell you, just because something works for your face in dreary England, does not mean that it’s going to work in the sunshine and the heat.
Imagine someone with makeup dripping off their face in the sunshine, because that’s basically how I’ve looked on my past holidays. But this year it has to be different. Which is why, like any true makeup addict, I’ve actually been planning my holiday makeup well in advance, especially so that I could tell you guys the essentials to have in your holiday makeup bag.
So without further a-do, here’s what I decided to take away with me this year!
NYX Colour Correcting Liquid: Green
Being the extremely pale human that I am, instead of transforming into a bronzed Goddess on holiday, I tend to go more tomato-red. Which is why this green primer is one of my holiday essentials! Green tones neutralise the appearance of red in the skin, so that you look normal and not like a beetroot.
This primer is really light-weight so you don’t even notice that you have it on, which it perfect for hot weather. As well as neutralising red tones, it also blurs out pores and leaves your skin looking dewy and hydrated! It’s £10 but honestly it lasts such a long time. I bought mine 6 months ago and it still hasn’t run out!
No7 Beautifully Matte Light Foundation
Foundation is by far the trickiest thing to nail on holiday in my opinion. You want to look glowy, but not sweaty. The coverage needs to last, but you don’t want to feel like your face is completely caked in the stuff. You want it to have a great SPF. You want it to match your tanned, holiday skin tone. It’s a lot of boxes to tick, and believe me I have been researching for months.
I went for more of a matte-finish foundation to counter-act the excess oil that my skin produces in the sun. I haven’t really used a lot of No7 products, but I am so impressed with this foundation. Although foundation is usually something I splash a bit more cash on, I went with a drugstore one because I was matching the colour to my tanned skin. 90% of the time I don’t have a tan, so it wasn’t worth buying anything expensive. I like this product so much I’m thinking of getting a paler colour for everyday.
This foundation is perfect for a holiday or summer in general because it’s so lightweight, but it still has a great amount of coverage. It stays all day, has SPF 15, and leaves your skin looking flawless.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette
I am a live and die eyeshadow fan, you can find me wearing eyeshadow even in 30 degree heat. I know this may not seem like a holiday makeup essential to everyone, but for me it is. Ideally, I only want to take one eyeshadow palette away with me, (although I may sneak in some cream shadows in there too), so really it needs to be a day-to-night kind of palette.
I didn’t even need to look hard to find one because I already knew in my heart which one I just had to take. You may have guessed, because I never stop talking about it, but of course it’s the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette. This is my go-to palette simply because of the pure variety it provides. Believe me it will spice up your life, and your holiday. I hate feeling limited when I go to do my makeup so it’s great to have loads of choice for my eyeshadow colours!
Highlight – Urban Decay and Topshop
Nothing screams holiday more than a kick-ass glow, and highlight is the best way to get it. Like many people, I have jumped on the highlighting train and plan to never get off. I am obsessed with the stuff. Which is evident by the fact that I think it’s perfectly acceptable to have 3 in my holiday makeup bag. And that’s me limiting myself.
My Topshop Glow Pots have to be included. The colours I have are: ‘Polished’ and ‘Gleam’. These colours work on all skin tones and I am so impressed with them. They actually make me want to try more Topshop makeup. These cream highlights are really easy to apply with a damp sponge and are really buildable. They leave you with a great natural, effortless glow.
I also like to take a powder highlight, for the sake of variety. My favourite at the moment is the Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Highlight in Luminous. This highlight is great if you want to go with a more dramatic, sparkly look.
Max Factor Bronzer
Being pale, it’s very difficult for me to find a bronzer that suits my skin tone and doesn’t make me look orange. Even when I’ve fake tanned, or i’m slightly tanned, it’s a struggle. But what’s great about this Max Factor bronzer is that it doesn’t have any orange undertones and it is really buildable. So, if you only like a light sweeping of bronzer, then this is the product for you.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara
Do you want panda eyes all day because of sweat? Do you wanna not be able to go in the pool in case it ruins your makeup? No, I didn’t think so. However, despite the fact that I am well aware how essential waterproof mascara is for holidays, this is the first time I have owned one in like 5 years. Basically, I have always been a bit of a state when it comes to my holiday makeup.
But this year I splurged big time. I bought the Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. I had heard loads of great things about the Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara, so I decided to buy the waterproof version! This mascara is great in so many ways. It really does what it says on the tin and doesn’t budge for anything. To the point where it is even difficult to take it off with an oil-based cleanser. Also, the packaging is super cute and who can say no to that?
Sport FX Definition Duo Eyeliner Pencil
This eyeliner duo is ideal for taking on holiday because it was actually created to be sweat proof! Now, just because this eyeliner was made for gym and exercise use, doesn’t mean you can’t also wear it on holiday! In the same vein as the waterproof mascara, I wanted to take something that I knew wouldn’t end up giving me panda eyes. And this eyeliner duo is perfect for that. Also, as it has both a brown and a black pencil. it is perfect for taking your look from day to night.
NYX Studio Finishing Powder
Finishing powder isn’t something I use day-to-day, but I always find that it’s a useful addition to my holiday makeup bag. This NYX finishing powder is fantastic at setting your makeup and keeping any unwanted oiliness at bay. I think this is a great dupe for it’s drastically more expensive counterparts, such as the Laura Mercier Setting Powder. Honestly I can’t rave about it enough!
